Some of the most amazing and life changing inventions have happened during the past 100 years. Everything from electricity to the internet has contributed to revolutionising our communication, our lifestyle and the way we live and interact with the world around us. Continual developments make our present day lives easier but a look back over some of the world’s most innovative discoveries can really show us just how far we have come and how much these inventions have changed our lives for the better.
Stone Age cave men were responsible for the first and most important of inventions when they discovered tools, which they made from different types of stone wood and bone. From then on there was no stopping inventors as through the centuries they discovered everything from the wheel and the plough, through electricity and dynamite to radio and refrigeration. It was man’s need to better himself that led to the development of these inventions that not only make our lives more comfortable but that can save lives too.
Simple developments like the smoke detector was invented by Randolph Smith and Kenneth House in 1961 and has since gone on to become a mandatory device in every home, saving countless numbers of lives along the way. Many other lifesaving instruments have also been invented within our lifetime. Things like the MRI, invented in 1973, and the life support machine in 1877 have helped mankind live longer and healthier lives.
Some of the greatest household appliances have also been created in our lifetime. The safety pin and the vacuum cleaner in the 1800s, right up to the microwave in 1955 when Percy Spencer discovered the power tube of a radar would pop popcorn kernels. He went onto patent this discovery and the microwave was produced, becoming a staple in nearly every household kitchen. The automatic blender is another labour saving invention that has helped us to produce food on a large scale allowing us to feed the masses at a low cost.
The internet is often viewed as one of the greatest inventions of all time. The concept has been around for years but was finally put into practise in1990 by Tim Berners-Lee. The invention of the internet opens up a world of information that is free to us all. This invention has changed the way we communicate with each other, the way we are entertained and the way we live our lives. In terms of influence on society the internet has to the greatest invention of all time.
Some of the greatest minds have given us the tools to help enable us to live better and longer lives and with new inventions patented every day there is no stopping man’s ability to create and develop ways to help us and the world around us. Every invention from the humble franking machine to the large scale jet engine helps us work, play and live better.
