You have to obtain a feeding response from the baby FIRST before beginning to feed in order to close the trachea so food won't go into the lungs. To get a feeding response from the baby, use your forefinger and thumb and rub the baby's beak at the base, where it meets the baby's face. A feeding response is when the baby bobs it's head up and down when you rub. It is now safe to feed. You'll need to use a handfeeding syringe to feed the baby.
